AR, VR and AI, what do they mean for our mobiles?

In the early 1990’s we couldn’t imagine having instant access to the internet on our mobiles. In the 18 years since the millennium bug, it’s easy to forget how far computers have come; from dial-up internet & floppy disks to PC monitors which took two people to move.

If you mentioned virtual reality and artificial intelligence in the 1990’s you’d have been faced with fear rather than the intrigue you receive today. There is so much new tech jargon that is beginning to baffle people, even those born in the late 90’s and early 2000’s.

Here are some definitions to help; virtual reality (VR), Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the latest is AR, augmented reality.

What is AR

Augmented Reality is the integration of digital information into a users environment; this happens in real time. This kind of tech is something we have seen in films like Jurassic Park; where dinosaurs were seen through a  device walking around in real life.
AR is something that is usually included in apps, they require 3D programs that allow a combination of digital information and camera use.

Phones are Changing How We Shop

Since the introduction of mobile internet online shopping has grown dramatically. As technology advances in the mobile industry, it’s no surprise that the way we shop will change with it. At the moment it’s only being introduced in the home furnishing industry, but it can be expected to integrate into the fashion world shortly.

Amazon is the latest store to join the technological race to ensure shoppers keep buying. Utilising Apple ARKit, augmented reality is beginning to be introduced by companies including Amazon and IKEA. The latest addition will enable customers to place potential purchases into their home before hitting the order button.

For iPhone users, this is available by downloading the iPhone app and clicking the camera button in the search bar.

New App technology, New Phones

Unfortunately, as new apps come on the market with features that require greater performance from the phone; it’s no surprise that some of these new ways of shopping will begin to leave older devices behind. For example, if you’re still using the iPhone 6 or below or an Android device, Amazon AR features doesn’t work. Although this isn’t the end of using your camera to shop, you can still use it to identify objects and search for them, like replacement objects.

The new app feature has been released just in time for Christmas which means your shopping may be about to get a lot easier or a lot more expensive!
